The largest Sitka Spruce in the nation

Look for the sign below about 3 miles from the west end of US Highway 26 on the Oregon Coast west of Portland.

Shown at left is the oldest and largest tree in the State of Oregon.  It is a Sitka Spruce and is about 750 years old and 206 feet tall.

It has a circumference of over 52 feet.

It is the largest Sitka Spruce tree in the United States.

You can find other evidence of an old growth forest near the tree.  The tree shown at the right has a split trunk.  This tree obviously began on a nursery tree and as the nursery tree further deteriorated and finally became non-existent, the roots of the tree went down around the fallen tree and rooted in the ground on each side of the nursery tree.  Today the nursery tree is gone and the tree trunk only spans the memory of the fallen tree.

A nursery tree is a tree that has fallen and began to decay.  As the decay proceeds the top of the fallen trunk becomes rich in nutrients and moss, ferns, and even trees began to grow in this rich environment.

The majesty of this ancient tree is inspiring.  This photo shows the massive trunk as you look up the trunk toward the top of the tree 206 feet above.

You can find this tree in Kloochy Creek Park near Seaside in northwest Oregon State.

The park is located on US Highway 26 about 3 miles east of its junction with US Highway 101 south of Seaside, OR.

The photographs above were submitted by Marcie A. Simpson when her family visited the site on July 5, 2006.  It appears the tree is alive and well.
