The Heliotrope Ridge trail is very busy because it is the main access to Mt. Baker for those who want to climb the mountain.  It begins in dense old growth forest and leads up a 1,400 climb to flower laiden avalanche chutes and the snowy alpine zone.

The trail starts by crossing Grouse Creek over a bridge and then enters the old growth forest.  As you climb steadily higher the trees thin and the huckleberries increase.  Just before you leave the treeline you will encounter the site of the old Kulshan Cabin where early climbers used to spend the night.  Above treeline the vegetation changes drastically and Mt. Baker and its Coleman Glacier looms above.

About 2.0 miles up the trail you will encounter a fork in the trail.  The left fork will take you east to the lateral moraine deposited by the receding glaciers.  From the overlook you can often see climbers practicing their skills.  To the right leads to Coleman Glacier, the route to Mt. Baker and its 10,781 foot summit.

If you intend to climb this trail we urge you to visit the Forest Service web site (below) for cautions and other information.

This trail enters the Mt. Baker Wilderness, limiting party size to 12. No fires are allowed.

A Northwest Forest Pass is required for each vehicle parked at the trailhead.
